A China Adoption Checklist

Many have asked my husband and me about the details of
adopting from China since we adopted a beautiful little
girl from there three years ago. The process is easy,
if you do the following steps.
Seek and agency or similar representative with experience
in Chinese adoptions. Having representation in China is
preferable.
Create a simple filing system for paperwork that can be
used easily and quickly. You will need it for the
documents required when applying and when travelling
to China to finalize your adoption.
There is a period of about six months between the time
you send your dossier to China and the time you are
notified that you have been matched with a child. Spend
that time with bigger projects like the child's
bedroom, making your house child-friendly, and bringing
all of your immunizations up-to-date. Arrange for the
services of a pediatrician upon the child's arrival.
When your referral arrives, quickly obtain a Visa from the
nearest Chinese consulate. Obtain and fill prescriptions
for antibiotics (both for you and the child) and any other
necessary medications.
Cash and travellers' checks should be in U.S. Dollars. Ask
your adoption representative how much actual cash you
will need, and in what denominations. Handle currency
exchange for day-to-day expenses in China instead of the
U.S.
Most of your luggage space will be occupied by gifts for
Chinese officials. Gift-giving is a long-standing Chinese
custom. Plan on honoring it. Pack as lightly as possible
for yourself and other travellers. The only baby supplies
you need to pack are clothes and medicines; everything
else is readily available at much less cost in China.
Upon your return, get a birth certificate for your home
state. An immigration attorney can walk you through this
process inexpensively. This isn't required, but it is
recommended because certified copies of birth records are
required by so many entities.
Finally, love your little one. You'll find that love
reflected back to you tenfold!
